Snoring is not just a nuisance to both the people sleeping next to or near to the snorer and the snorer themself (painful kicks in the night are not very pleasant!), it can also be a symptom of a major problem. Hence, snoring is not something that people do or should take lightly. Statistics also show that 40 per cent of people snore, making it a common problem. For these reasons, it is important to understand why people snore and what causes snoring for you, so that you can take remedial measures to eliminate the problem.

Why do people snore?

Snoring is caused when the air passage at the back of your throat gets obstructed. An obstruction in the air passage can cause the soft palate of the throat to vibrate. The noise of the air passing over this flapping soft palate is what is known as ’snoring’.

Obesity may be one of the major reasons for such an obstruction in the air passage. If you have some extra weight, excess of flabby tissue and/or fat can obstruct the nasal passage or press down on your throat. This can be worsened when an obese person lies on their back, since the excess fat on the front neck area will push back and obstruct more.

Another phenomena associated with the occurrence of snoring is a change in the seasons. A change in the climate can cause the nostrils to squeeze closer together. When you start breathing through your mouth, instead of your nose, snoring can occur, since your throat is not tuned for breathing through the mouth during sleep.

Another reason stated for snoring is that our septum, that divides your left nostril from your right one, sometimes gets deviated due to small growths. These growths are called nasal polyps – soft yellow, pink or greyish lumps that grow inside the nose. This affects the way the air and the quantum of air is drawn into your nose. Nasal polyps are common and are not cancerous and can be treated with medicine by your GP.

If you are a regular user of certain sleeping pills, you may be affected by snoring because these pills relax the muscles of your throat more than necessary. These muscles can then sag into the air passage to obstruct the flow of air. This may also happen when you have a deep sleep. This is similar for why drinking alcohol can cause snoring – alcohol relaxes the muscles.

Snoring may also be caused by a larger than average palate, which is located at the back of the roof of your mouth. You have a palate to shut off your nasal passage when you swallow. If this palate is long and soft then the air passage is narrowed. Likewise, if you have a long uvula (the piece of soft tissue that can be seen dangling down from the soft palate), then you may have the same problem. When you start sleeping deeply the palate and uvula may shift and block the throat, causing snoring.

Sleep apnea is a condition signified by longer than normal pauses in breathing or unusually low amount of breathing during sleep.
